Cheer Leaders in Cricket

The Indian Premier League or the IPL as it is popularly known has been attracting the attention of all by offering complete entertainment in the form of massive cloud touching sixes, fiery bowling, high octane filled performances from various players and for the controversies too. IPL stole the hearts of millions of fans by making them glue to the TV sets during its seasons and has undoubtedly given a new dimension to the game.

Apart from the above IPL offers another distinct feature which is new to the world of cricket. YES! The concept of cheerleaders! But the question is whom do they actually cheer up? For instance, we as fans of the Sachin Tendulkar have been cheering him up since the day he played his first match and we do so, as we are already entertained by the legend. So is the case with each player and his own set of fans. Why should there be a group of young girls putting up a parallel show along the sides of the ground and all TV cameras zooming in and out to telecast their show to millions of viewers? Is their something which these so called “cheer leaders” do to cricket? A critical analysis of this question is very much essential.
As everyone knows, IPL has been the primary reason for the commercialization of cricket. Though it had helped in marketing cricket in a better manner it shouldn’t cause any disrespect to the game. “We all love only true cricket and its true heroes”. Let’s wait and watch if the authorities can understand this and endorse the views of a “true cricket lover.”
