Importance of Family Budget

Planning a family budget is an important task and a heavy responsibility for the head of the family. It is integral to every family and is required for its healthy functioning. A family is like machinery which is an asset to who so ever owns it. It has to be taken care of for its proper working and for its desired performance. If ignored it will stop being productive to you and leads to poor performance.

Budget helps in binding the family needs and expenditures. It also keeps a check on over- expenditure if any. It is a good way of maintaining a right balance between a family income and family expenditure. This is because no one can spend all the income on consumption and other requirements and some part is required to be saved for future. The main aim of family budget is to have a smooth functioning of the family where requirements are fulfilled according to the income in hand. It prevents wastage of money on things which are unimportant or are useless. This is the importance of family budget.

Now consider a family having no budget. In this case, nobody in the family has an idea where the money is being spent. When at the end of the month, no money is left leaving behind still some of the requirements incomplete, then is realized the importance of family budget.  Such situations arise because of over spending on irrelevant needs of the family members due to which necessary requirements could not be fulfilled. This is how families with no budget suffer when nothing is left for savings.

Some people have a negative perception towards families with a budget. Some of them even think that families with fewer earning make a family budget, which is purely wrong. Budget has nothing to do with the size of earnings. It is required only for the perfect execution of the family desires where each person’s need is given equal attention and where money is not over spent on unnecessary demands.

Then is another important aspect of family budget which is saving. Is saving requisite only by families with low income? Again the answer is ‘No’. Which family does not want a secure future? Spending money on reckless needs does not make any sense. Planning and prioritizing the wants of every individual in a family is a must. Saving rest of the money for future needs is also important. Budgeting is required by families of lower, lower-middle and upper-middle class.

A sensible and intelligent budget making will keep you and your family in good position for a long time whereas a careless attitude in over-spending of money will lead you in crisis soon. Now a question arise, ‘How to plan a family budget?’ This depends totally on how much is the monthly income of each family. But approximately 70-75% of the income should be spent on the regular family needs which include educational fees of children, daily consumptions, maintenance of house and other seasonal requirements. 20-25% should be spent on investments and savings. These figures vary as per the income of every household.

Keeping in mind the changing scenario of the economy and the rising prices, budgeting becomes crucial. For every family budget should never be written in permanent ink rather it should be made flexible so that changes with changing times can be brought about in it. Priority of needs is must. In the process of making a family budget one should not become a miser due to which most of the family needs suffer. Remember family budget is made not to reduce the expenses but to minimize the over-usage of things, if any.
